Why a Tequila Sunrise out-cross you ask. Glad you asked! We love this color morph and all the variations it comes in. At this point in time, after speaking with a number of people who love it too, and breed Tequila Sunrise, we’ve been alerted to signs that it is suffering from the dreaded I word INBREEDING. Scientifically, when one goes above a particular coefficient of inbreeding, one starts to see abnormalities such as back kinks, low fertility, etc. It’s being seen with this morph. It’s no one’s fault, it just comes with the territory of trying to investigate color genes and breed true, again and again and again, along with a limited source of the morph. Soooo…… we are contributing to the health of the Tequila Sunrise morph by breeding out-crosses. These can be selectively bred to each other to work back towards “pure” Tequila Sunrise, in time, and preserve a low coefficient of inbreeding. Since the pattern and colorations seen in Tequila Sunrise are more or less dominant, the out-crosses appear to be purebred Tequila Sunrise!
